New Dance: No More Tears

Jennifer Choo Sue Chin | April 28, 2020

Dance Name: No More Tears
Choreographed by: Adeline Cheng, Jennifer Choo
Description: 32 counts 4 Walls low intermediate dance with tango flavour
Music: No More Tears by Fred Cheng
Stepsheet: https://www.copperknob.co.uk/stepsheets/no-more-tears-ID141790.aspx

Adeline Cheng sent me a lovely tango Cantonese song by Fred Cheng entitled No More Tears. I fell in love with it the first moment I heard it. What’s best was when we phrased out the music, it’s 32 counts with no tags and no restarts. What a blessing to find this song!

We quickly put together some steps to fit the rhythm and came up with a 32 count 4 wall low intermediate line dance, just in time for ONlive Dance At Home which Rebecca Lee put together on 25-26 Apr 2020, a paid virtual event for line dancers to learn new choreography. The dance was very well received and immediately after the workshop, Penny Tan has done a video demo of it! She was faster than lightning when our stepsheet was not even uploaded yet.

And here’s some background about Adeline and I. We became closer during the Malaysian Movement Control Order as we are organising daily line dance jammings on FB Live since 18 March, something we have been doing for our Line Dance community worldwide who are also confined at home due to the global pandemic. The jammings proved to be very successful with dancers looking forward to our jammings every night, where Adeline and I took turns to lead some 7-10 line dances and where line dancers could gather virtually, dance together and chit chat on cyberspace. This eventually led us to be on Streamline and Retro-line together with the other international choreographers and instructors sharing new and old dances. So looks like this is our new normal for now.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank those who have generously donated to Line Dance Foundation. The charitable organisation is working at it’s max now helping out the many line dance professionals in sustaining their livelihood, without classes/events/income during the pandemic. So funds are fast depleting. If you have yet to donate and would like to contribute to our line dance family, please contact your local LDF ambassadors.

So stay healthy, dance at home, because our muscles are wasting away with less movement being confined to homes. We can also revise our dances, learn news and old ones, as this is the best time. When we’re dancing and socialising (although virtually), we are generating our happy juice, and not be depressed by the bad news of pandemic. Hope to see and dance with you in the very near future. Fingers crossed the virus will be eliminated totally very very soon!

New Dance: 1001 Nights

Jennifer Choo Sue Chin | October 22, 2019

Dance Name: 1001 Nights
Choreographed by: Winson Eng, Philip Sobrielo, Jennifer Choo
Description: 2 Wall Phrased Intermediate
Music: 1001 Nights Arabian Nights by Ch!pz
Stepsheet: https://www.copperknob.co.uk/stepsheets/1001-nights-ID137169.aspx

Behind The Dance…

The dance was conceptualised for Wynette and my Arabian Nights themed LDF event held in Klang on 19 Oct 2019. So Philip Sobrielo and Winson Eng came by my place on the eve of the event to finalise the dance steps, until wee hours of the morning.

About the Song & Phrasing

We chose the music 1001 Nights Arabian Nights by Ch!pz, a pop group from the Netherlands to fit the theme of the event. The dance is called 1001 Nights with signature moves from the artists themselves, showing the 1-0-0-1 arm movements which are really cool. We had the dance phrased to fit the different melody and tempo and lyrics of the music, but the steps are fairly simple and repetitive in nature. The music will tell you when to do what, it’s pretty obvious.

We hope you will enjoy this fun dance, esp the arms bit. We did and the music is catchy and awesome. Do take a look!

On a side note, we raised RM8000 from ticket sales, donations and proceeds from stalls, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who have contributed in one way or another, making the event a great success. Love you all <3

New Dance: GRADUALLY…

Jennifer Choo Sue Chin | July 19, 2019

Dance name: Gradually…  (Chim Chim)
Description: 48 count 2 wall intermediate waltz line dance
Choreographers: Jennifer Choo & Wendee Chen
Stepsheet: https://www.copperknob.co.uk/stepsheets/graduallychim-chim-ID134982.aspx

Behind the dance…

I heard this beautiful “bom cha cha” Cantonese song on radio one day last year and found out it’s sung by Eason Chan, a popular Hong Kong singer. Being so busy with my work, I forgot about it then, but had casually mentioned it to Wendee Chen to check it out early this year. Like me, she loved it “at first sight” and quickly put some steps together and sent me. And it sat for the longest time in my inbox waiting to be unveiled. After the success of Diamond Lover (co with Tracy Hoo), I began to feel more energized and motivated to choreograph again. Wendee reminded me of the dance in my cold storage and encouraged me to complete it. Within several days and amidst our several trips out of town, we finalised the dance. Taught it to my classes and, thanks to the song, they all loved it too “at first sight”. Not often, my students would clap their hands instinctively after dancing a dance for the first time (not even my dances) but they did, and the feeling is absolutely satisfying.

About the song…

Several people told me (at different times) that all of Eason Chan’s songs are very nice. Wow, I think we should look into his songs for more future choreography! This particular song Chim Chim (cantonese) or Jian Jian (mandarin) means “gradually”, and the artist sang about the nostalgia of a gradual lost love. Lyrics of his song can be found on his music video MV.

Videos of the dance

I taught the dance at Sally Mak’s party in early July. Here are some videos taken on that day. Before the party ended, they requested for the dance once more.

New Dance: DIAMOND LOVER

Jennifer Choo Sue Chin | June 17, 2019

Tracy Hoo had organised a yet another successful event on 16 June 2019, this time the theme was Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend. For this event, she has again suggested for us to collaborate in a choreography. We were trying to find an interesting song that matches the theme, and found this easy going song, not too fast, nice beats, and slightly funky. It was the theme song for a Chinese drama serial Diamond Lover and sung by the lead actor, Rain from Korea. Name of the music is also Diamond Lover. The music was perfect for us to work on!

The dance we choreographed is 32 counts 4 wall and rated beg/int to keep the easy going stress-free feel of the music. We also name the dance DIAMOND LOVER. The dance would end exactly on the front wall, so we were ecstatic!

Later on, we found that Rain had a Korean version of the music, titled Marilyn Monroe. It has the same music structure and can be used as the alternative music.

Do check out the dance! Stepsheet on copperknob here: https://www.copperknob.co.uk/stepsheets/diamond-lover-ID134281.aspx
