New Dance: Home Is Where You Are

Jennifer Choo Sue Chin | May 24, 2020

Dance Name: HOME IS WHERE YOU ARE
Choreographed by: Rebecca Lee, Jennifer Choo
Description: 32 counts 2 Walls  intermediate nightclub dance
Music: To Mommy by Wang Yibo
Stepsheet: https://www.copperknob.co.uk/stepsheets/home-is-where-you-are-ID142349.aspx

This is a tribute to all mothers! Jit Lian, one of the Lim Sisters sent me the music (To Mommy by Wang Yibo) and I was touched by it immediately. Do check out the lyrics translation! When discussing with Rebecca Lee on having the Mother’s Day special online dance event, we decided to collaborate for this beautiful tribute song.

Rebecca and I have been talking about a collaboration since years ago but never came round completing one. Sometimes halfway into it but some other choreographers released another dance to the same music. We finally did it! It’s a 32 counts 2 wall intermediate nightclub line dance with a restart. I was supposed to teach this dance for the Mother’s Day event but due to an unfortunate retina hole 3 days before the event, I was not able to teach it. Rebecca taught it on my behalf. And I did a teach video a week after to give my ‘lasered retina’ a rest. I’ve been reducing my screentime as well, thus this article came a little late.

Stay healthy everyone!

New Dance: No More Tears

Jennifer Choo Sue Chin | April 28, 2020

Dance Name: No More Tears
Choreographed by: Adeline Cheng, Jennifer Choo
Description: 32 counts 4 Walls low intermediate dance with tango flavour
Music: No More Tears by Fred Cheng
Stepsheet: https://www.copperknob.co.uk/stepsheets/no-more-tears-ID141790.aspx

Adeline Cheng sent me a lovely tango Cantonese song by Fred Cheng entitled No More Tears. I fell in love with it the first moment I heard it. What’s best was when we phrased out the music, it’s 32 counts with no tags and no restarts. What a blessing to find this song!

We quickly put together some steps to fit the rhythm and came up with a 32 count 4 wall low intermediate line dance, just in time for ONlive Dance At Home which Rebecca Lee put together on 25-26 Apr 2020, a paid virtual event for line dancers to learn new choreography. The dance was very well received and immediately after the workshop, Penny Tan has done a video demo of it! She was faster than lightning when our stepsheet was not even uploaded yet.

And here’s some background about Adeline and I. We became closer during the Malaysian Movement Control Order as we are organising daily line dance jammings on FB Live since 18 March, something we have been doing for our Line Dance community worldwide who are also confined at home due to the global pandemic. The jammings proved to be very successful with dancers looking forward to our jammings every night, where Adeline and I took turns to lead some 7-10 line dances and where line dancers could gather virtually, dance together and chit chat on cyberspace. This eventually led us to be on Streamline and Retro-line together with the other international choreographers and instructors sharing new and old dances. So looks like this is our new normal for now.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank those who have generously donated to Line Dance Foundation. The charitable organisation is working at it’s max now helping out the many line dance professionals in sustaining their livelihood, without classes/events/income during the pandemic. So funds are fast depleting. If you have yet to donate and would like to contribute to our line dance family, please contact your local LDF ambassadors.

So stay healthy, dance at home, because our muscles are wasting away with less movement being confined to homes. We can also revise our dances, learn news and old ones, as this is the best time. When we’re dancing and socialising (although virtually), we are generating our happy juice, and not be depressed by the bad news of pandemic. Hope to see and dance with you in the very near future. Fingers crossed the virus will be eliminated totally very very soon!

New Dance: The New Watermelon Crawl

Jennifer Choo Sue Chin | March 21, 2020

Description: 70 count 2 wall country style line dance

Music: Watermelon Crawl by Tracy Byrd

Copperknob Stepsheet: https://www.copperknob.co.uk/stepsheets/the-new-watermelon-crawl-ID140621.aspx

Linedancerweb: https://www.linedancerweb.com/dance.php?id=63692

I normally don’t choreograph to music that already has a dance to it. However, someone really dear requested me to choreograph to it to keep up with the group of (modern) dancers who prefer to dance to music phrases. I agreed as other dances were set in unphrased for beginners. This dance is intermediate, phrased and with tags. Part A is danced to the verses and has 38 counts while Part B is danced to the chorus and has 32 counts. The tag is really simple with just a grapevine to the right and another to the left.

I actually used the lyrics of the 4th verse as the basis of my choreography. “She rocked back on her heels dropped down to her knees
Crawled across the floor then she jumped back on her feet.” So part A was just that, Rocking back, Do some heel & footwork, Hitch the knee (no way majority of line dancers would drop down to their precious knees and crawl across the floor!) Jazz Box and jumping back… I try to hit the crescendo with a flick etc. Do dance it with the music and you’ll know what I mean 🙂 Hope you will enjoy it as much as we did.

Try to learn it and dance at home in the global pandemic. I know classes and events have stopped but I’ve decided to release the dance anyway to keep you guys dancing at home. I’ve done a step by step teach video while I was in Mumbai India. Quite unplanned but there was a lovely dance studio at the Clubhouse where we stayed so I made use of it to do a teach video. Also taught my 2 nephews and boy, were they good in picking up the steps!

Anyway, I hope we all stay healthy! Stay at home and hope this pandemic will soon pass and we could all go back to our classes and dance events and NORMAL LIFE.

New Dance: CNY Keep Smiling

Jennifer Choo Sue Chin | December 10, 2019

Dance Name: CNY Keep Smiling
Choreographed by: Jennifer Choo, Lily Soong & Joanne Yap
Description: 1 Wall Phrased FUN dance
Music: CNY Keep Smiling by 8TV
Stepsheet: https://www.copperknob.co.uk/stepsheets/cny-keep-smiling-wahaha-ID138120.aspx

Behind The Dance…

Chinese New Year 2020 comes a month earlier than usual! Lily Soong approached me to collaborate on this new CNY dance. It is her first choreography together with her daughter Joanne Yap.

About the Song & Phrasing

The song was produced by 8TV, a local Malaysian TV channel. Phrasing was not too simple but we managed to phrased the music into manageable parts. We kept the Part A steps simple so it can be enjoyed by everyone. The hand movements in Part B were from the original MV while Part C was made to be FUN.

We hope you will enjoy this fun dance, esp the tag, you might get a little childhood nostalgia dancing this 🙂
