Fairy Tale Line Dance Party
Jennifer Choo Sue Chin | March 23, 2011At last, 20 March 2011 came to turn Hee Lai Ton Puchong into a Fairy Tale Wonderland. True enough, many turned up in Fairy Tale costumes so the event felt more lively and fun. I was dressed in Rapunzel’s maroon dress and wearing Rapunzel’s golden blond long wig. There were noticeably a few Alices (of Wonderland), a couple of Queens of Hearts, Little Red Riding Hoods, Princes and Princesses, Ariel (little mermaid), Cleopatra, Snow White, Minnie Mouse, Cinderella in her rags, Witches, Pirates, Pocahontas, Fairygodmothers, and lots of fairies! They came from far and wide, as far as Australia, Singapore, Johor, Melaka, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang and locally, KL!
The royal ball was due to start at 11am, and participants started trickling in way before 10:30am and before the receptionists could arrive and set up the reception table! Their delay was due to some traffic jams and lack of parking space near the restaurant. They finally came and gave out doorgifts and cut lucky draw chits to the attendees awaiting for the party to start. All participants received a mini apple in conjunction with the Fairy Tale theme (Which fairy tale was that?? haha) and some early birds received a packet of brown rice health snack, courtesy of Everlasting Food Industries. Popular fairy tale/disney music was played before the party starts to set everyone into the Fairy Tale mood.
The ball started off with a mini parade of participants who dressed up in Fairy Tale Characters to the Disney Song, When You Wish Upon A Star. These characters certainly felt like stars for the moment as many photographers took endless pictures/videos of them. The dancing then started with an easy warming up dance Comic Strip, Enchantment, and Wonderland Waltz amongst others to suit the Fairy Tale theme. Everyone just got down and danced their heart out.
Before teaching Zoobi Doobi, I narrated a Fairy Tale story that started off with Once Upon A Time and ended with Happily ever after. It’s a story about a princess who loved to dance and got hooked in line dancing. No prize for guessing who that princess was 🙂 Then Zoobi Doobi was taught and something “funny” happened and everyone had a good laugh! Haha, no, I’m not sharing what that was! You need to be in the party to be that privileged! My new dance, Zoobi Doobi, was very well received. All the stepsheets on the tables were “swept off” and I already have many reminders on my HP, FB, emails to send them the script and music.
There were more dancing after the mini workshop. The floor was filled with enthusiastic dancers most of the time dancing to their favourite music. Food started to get served while dancers continued dancing. Then the participants were entertained by a belly dancer from Penang, Ang Mee Mee, dancing to Tamil, her own choreography. Mee Mee was my childhood friend though we were from different schools. We found each other again in recent years via social networking and happy to see we’re both dancing, she in BD and me in LD. She wanted to experience a Line Dance party so here she was, performing her skills and techniques 🙂 Her husband, CK, was the cute photographer that was photographing everyone.
More dancing continued. Some of the notable dances in this session was Passion and Rilassamento, both very artistic dances. I was worried that not many people would attempt Passion due to its many spins and turns, but am pleasantly surprised with the number of dancers on the floor. Nothing is too hard for us to handle! 😀 Wendy Teh and her gang showed us what energy was by showcasing The Best of Both Worlds while Eddie Tang showed us his new dance called You Make Things Better. Should Leong Mei Ling was present at the party (she was down with flu and fever and thus couldn’t make it, get well! soon!), she would have showed us her new Joget Hati Senang too! Anyhow, her costume was there at the party worn by Soo Wong – a beautifu Queen of Hearts costume, complete with crown!
The event continued with the Best Dressed (Mirror, mirror on the wall, who has the best dressed of them all?) competition. Unbeknown to anyone (to keep everyone natural), 5 mystery juries went around giving out nomination papers to those whom they think deserved a vote when everyone was busy dancing. The juries were Bryan Ang (Seremban), Maggie Chong (JB), Eddie Tang (Penang), Melvin Yeik (KL) and Jackie Teh (KL). Only 1 participant received 5 votes from all judges, Wendy Chong from KL dressed up as Prince Charming, so she won the Best Dressed prize comprising of a DVD Player & EDP. 4 participants received 4 votes each, they are Ivy Low (Sexy Alice – KL), Bee Lan (Snow White – Penang), Paula (Pirate – KL) and Lily Tan (Cleopatra – Penang). The tie-breaker was determined by instructress Joanne Wong and Chrystal, so 2nd prize went to Lily Tan in her golden Cleopatra outfit and 3rd prize went to Ivy Low in her sexy Alice outfit. Paula and Bee Lan won the 2 consolation prizes. Congratulations to the winners!
The participants continued dancing while the performers changed into their costumes. We then performed a skit dance with the theme The Lonely Ballerina in a Music Box belonging to an evil queen. The queen unlocked the music box one stormy night and out came the lonely ballerina in search of her true love. The handsome king (Evil queen’s husband) saw the pretty ballerina and attempted to woo her. He succeeded but then came the queen to get back her king! He got punished while the ballerina got back into her box dejectedly. But she realized it’s not the end of the world and sang/danced to I Will Survive! Meanwhile the King had enough of the queen’s evil and abusive ways and shooed her off the kingdom. He got back to the ballerina and apologized (Sorry Sorry!). The ballerina and king got married in an elaborated fairy tale wedding. However in their embrace, the queen came and locked them into the music box. She had the last laugh (now getting the reigns of the kingdom)… ! Video to be uploaded soon!
More dancing after the skit and lucky draw of 12 table draw prizes, 25 consolation prizes and 7 main prizes. The main prize, an electric oven was won by Jeannie from Penang. Congrats!
The royal ball ended at about 4.45pm. Those who travelled from other kingdoms quickly hopped into their carriage so they could reach home before the clock strike 12! A few Cinderellas left their shoes… LOL. Everyone danced happily ever after and went home feeling satisfied and happy. I’m so glad they enjoyed. All the stress and sleepless nights I had was well worth it 🙂
